The Canada national cricket team is the men’s team that represents the country of Canada in international cricket. The team is organized by Cricket Canada, which became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1968. Canada Cricket History.

Along with the United States, Canada was one of two participants in the first international cricket match played in New York City in 1844. Annual Canada-U.S. The fixture is now known as the Ooty Cup.

1st International Match

Canada’s first international match against a team other than the United States came in 1932 when Australia visited. As with the Associate Members of the ICC, the team’s first major international tournament was the ICC Trophy in England in 1979, where they qualified for the 1979 World Cup after finishing second behind Sri Lanka.

From 2006 to 2013, Canada held both One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International status in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups. Cricket is generally believed to have been introduced to Canada by British soldiers after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, although the earliest confirmed reference to cricket is in 1785 at a match played on St. Helen’s Island, Quebec. which later became its place. Expo 67.

Main History

Modern Canadian cricket, however, traces its roots to areas in Upper Canada, particularly Toronto, then known as York. During the early years of the nineteenth century, a schoolmaster named George Anthony Barber encouraged the game there, and in 1827 founded the Toronto Cricket Club. Barber instigated a match between the Toronto Cricket Club and the Upper Canada College cricket team.

1st Tour of England

The first official visit of the Canadian team to Great Britain was in 1887. An unofficial tour in 1880 was abandoned after Canadian captain Thomas Dale was arrested for defection and cheating during a match against Leicestershire.

The tour began with two matches against Ireland, against which Canada drew one and lost the other, followed by two matches against Scotland with the same result. The tour then took off in the northeast of England with a defeat against Northumberland Gentlemen and a draw against Durham.

International Cup

In June and July 2008, Canada hosted Bermuda for three ODIs and Intercontinental Cup matches against Bermuda and Scotland.

In August, Canada traveled to Ireland for the World T20 qualification tournament. Canada failed to qualify for the World T20, finishing fifth behind Bermuda. ODI and Intercontinental Cup matches were affect due to rain. Canada Cricket History.

In the late summer of 2008, the West Indies and Bermuda came to Canada to play the Scotiabank ODI series against Canada. Canada beat Bermuda to defeat the West Indies in the final. West Indies captain Chris Gayle scored his 16th ODI century to lead his side to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Canada in the final of the Scotiabank ODI series in King City.

Canada, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe participated in the tournament. Canada lost both and drew one match, however in a tie with Zimbabwe, Canada lost by points in the bowl out. Sri Lanka won the final by defeating Pakistan in the final. The tournament was expect to be play every year for the next four years.

American Championships

In late November 2008, Canada participated in the American Championships in Florida, USA. The United States, after years of turmoil, came together and won the championship. Canada finished third behind Bermuda in net run rate, as their match was abandoned due to rain.

In April 2009, Canada participated in the 2009 ICC Cricket World Cup qualification tournament. Assembling the best Canadian team in many years, Canada cruised through the early stages of the event and ultimately finished second in the tournament. World Cup Qualifiers

In January 2014, due to poor performance in the World Cup qualifiers in New Zealand, Canada lost ODI and T20I status and there was no chance of major-stage international cricket until the next qualifier. For more details click here
