In the regional competition, Thailand is Southeast Asia’s most successful football team with six AFF Championship trophies and nine senior-level gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games, more than any other Southeast Asian nation. At the top level, Thailand finished third in the 1972 AFC Asian Cup which they hosted, and have participated in the AFC Asian Cup a total of seven times to date.

Additionally, the team finished fourth in the 1990 and 1998 Asian Games and participated in the Summer Olympics twice. However, Thailand has been unable to achieve highs in continental and world records. The team won its first AFC Asian Cup in 2007 and had to wait 47 years to finally get out of the group stage in 2019. Thailand also reached the final round of World Cup qualification in 2002 and 2018 but failed to qualify for all FIFA World Cups.

In 2014

In 2014, Thailand ended a 12-year AFF Championship title drought with late goals from Charl Chippois and Chanathip Songkrasin in a dramatic 4-3 aggregate victory over Malaysia in the second leg of the final in Bukit Jalil. The team did not lose a match until the second leg of the finals and often displayed a tiki-taka style of play, for example, 27 passes in a row during the first leg of the final against Malaysia.

This resulted in Kiatisuk becoming the first person to win the ASEAN Football Championship as both a player and a coach. Thailand managed to defend their AFF Championship reign two years later in 2016, defeating Indonesia 3-2 on aggregate despite losing the first leg.

In 2015

In 2015, the theft fueled hopes for both players and fans of Thailand to finally reach the World Cup tournament and tensions are building as the national team begins the second round of the AFC for the 2018 World Cup qualification. Thailand’s popular striker Terasel Dangda has rejoined the national team after his loan spell with UD Almeria ended.

A Group F draw with Chinese Taipei, Iraq, and Vietnam, against which Thailand played their first match at home on May 24, could only be won with a shot from 20 yards. They played a very easy match on the same opponent’s soil, winning 3-0.

Thailand won both matches against Chinese Taipei and drew both matches against Iraq 2–2, qualifying for the next round as Group F winners. Main History

Since Somyot Poompanmoung took over, FA Thailand has aimed to position the men’s national football team among the top teams in Asia through 20 years of solid development plans and preparations. After being eliminated from the World Cup qualifiers, Kiatisuk resigned and Thailand appointed Milovan Rajevac as a coach.

Thus becoming the first non-Brazilian/German/English team to head the team. With a new coach, however, Thailand failed to defend their AFF Championship title in 2018 when they lost to Malaysia on away goals in the semi-finals.

2019 Asian Cup

Ahead of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, Thailand was drawn in Group A alongside hosts the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and India. Rajeev oversaw Thailand’s opening 1-4 loss to India. The Serbian coach was sacked and his assistant Ceresic Udiarthai became the interim coach on 7 January.

However, the team suffered a major loss of key players when Chanathip Songkrasin was injure. While Teresa Dangda and Thirathun Bunmathan refused to participate in the qualification due to various reasons. Between 5 December 2021 and 1 January 2022, Polking accomplished the feat. As he led the War Elephants to a 6–2 aggregate win after a 2–2 second league draw.
